Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe, possibly named after a character in Shakespeare's "King Lear", was born the second child on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1810, his father left, and a year later his mother died. He was taken in by John Allan, and though never formally adopted, he lived with him as father and son. He traveled a lot as a child. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army, and was not discharged until April of 1829. When his foster father remarried after his wife’s death and Poe’s discharge, his father disowned Poe. Although there were early attempts, Poe did not fully pursue his career as a writer until after his brother’s death.
Many people who have studied Poe's works agree that they were inspired by his hard childhood. Although he is known mostly for his dark and somewhat morbid works, he was also the creator of rather beautiful pieces. His purpose was never to inform, but rather to entertain. Hyperbole was often used because it was able to give a new view to his poetry. He was able to create the imagery that made his writings so memorable.

Shel Silverstein
Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1920, Shel Silverstein was to become a well known children's author. He enlisted in the Army at a young age, all the while making cartoons. These cartoons were very popular and were the beginning of his recognition. It wasn't until after the Army that he seriously wanted to become a poet. With encouragement from his publisher, he wrote his first and most well known book, The Giving Tree.
Perhaps his struggles through the Army were his reasons for creating delightful works for children to enjoy. Shel's purpose was also to entertain; unlike Poe, he often tried to teach a lesson with his stories and poems. He used hyperbole to make his stories comical. This makes his stories and poems more appealing to his audience and added emphasis the pieces. |
