Shel Silverstein- Silverstein, born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1920, began his adulthood by joining the army. Though he was loyal throughout his service in Korea and Japan, Silverstein spent some time drawing cartoons that were soon published in magazines such as Look and Sports Illustrated. He mostly gained his popularity when Playboy decided to begin putting his cartoons in their magazines. Silverstein was at the high point of his early career during this time, from around 1957 - the mid 1970's. Silverstein's writing and poetry career kicked off when he began exploring the subjects, publishing many cartoon and written books for multiple magazines. While he dabbled in a music career, Silverstein's writing continued to stand out. After being convinced to write children books by book editor Ursula Nordstrom, SIlverstein published one of his most famous works; The Giving Tree.

Edgar Allan Poe- Edgar Allan Poe, possibly named after a character in Shakespeare's "King Lear", was born the second child on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1810, his father left, and a year later his mother dies. He was taken in by John Allan, and though never formally adopted, he lived with them. He traveled a lot as a child. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army, and was not discharged until April of 1829. When his foster father remarried after his wife’s death and Poe’s discharge, he disowned Poe. Although there were early attempts. Poe did not fully pursue his career as a writer until after his brother’s death.

Edgar Allen Poe lived a very sad childhood. At a young age he had to experience at a young age death and many other tra witch we can assume is why he writes such sad and scary stores. Edger in his writing uses many types of literature that make his story come to life but his use of diction is what makes all of his writings creep, spooky, and scary. Diction lets the author take a trip into the authors mind and see what what creepy thoughts and feelings really go on in Edgar's mind.
