Edgar Allan Poe, possibly named after a character in Shakespeare's "King Lear", was born the second child on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1810, his father left, and a year later his mother dies. He was taken in by John Allan, and though never formally adopted, he lived with them. He traveled a lot as a child. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army, and was not discharged until April of 1829. When his foster father remarried after his wife’s death and Poe’s discharge, he disowned Poe. Although there were early attempts.
Shel Silverstein, born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1920, began an early adulthood by joining the Army. Though he was loyal throughout his service in Korea and Japan, Silverstein spent some time drawing cartoons for the Stars and Stripes magazine. These cartoons were soon published in other popular magazines such as Look and Sports Illustrated. He mostly gained his popularity when Playboy began putting his cartoons in their magazines. Silverstein was at the high point of his cartooning career during this time, from around 1957 - the mid 1970's.
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing. Shel Silverstein used similes in all of his poems. in his poem 'Beard" it talks about how his beard is so long it wraps around him. This means according to the article that the beard was so long I wrapped around him means that he has no clothes on. |
A example for my simile is the cat is as cute as a button, this is a example of a simile because it compares one thing to another, in my example it compares a cat to a button, which is saying the cat is cute.
